Conflict resolution for the lazy

I helped resolve an emotionally charged conflict at work, and it was unusually easy. We had a lot of things to discuss. I proposed starting with settling several minor concerns without attacking the main issue.

We discussed them and quickly found solutions. In the process, emotions faded. The main disagreement became much less intimidating, and we solved it too.

I think it’s a solid strategy for many situations. Partly thanks to the inspiring power of working on and conquering challenges together. Partly because an issue that seems minor to a bystander may be a pain in the neck for the people involved in the conflict. Anyway, it works.

When I was a child and my dad played chess with me, he used to say, “Fewer pieces, easier game.” A perfect summary.
