A substitute for a time machine

We tend to spend a lot of time picking out a new pair of shoes or a laptop. We compare different options, conduct thorough research, try them on, and test them.

But when it comes to choosing a business idea or deciding how to proceed with an important project, we often consider only one option. We usually have a notion and just muse over whether to proceed with it or not.

We stick with it and waste a lot of energy trying to defend our vision. We are comfortable with it and hope that it works out.

Sometimes, I catch myself with such thoughts and shudder.

Why do we tend to be this way? Because options to buy something are everywhere and clearly presented to us. It’s hard to escape them.

When it comes to these more significant decisions, it’s quite the opposite. By default, we have no alternative to our new brilliant idea. Often, after a couple of years, we realize it wasn’t so brilliant after all, and that it would have been nice if we had invested some time in exploring other options.

I am going to use this post instead of a time machine, as a reminder that the future me will be happier with three brilliant ideas instead of just one.
