Straight up from a low base

I have a bad habit: I often sit slouched. I’ve tried to fight this bad posture several times, but it was hard.

Today, I made another attempt. I tried to sit straight during all of my video calls. There were plenty of them. I was surprised by how effortlessly I managed to keep the right posture through the long hours. Of course, there’s no magic here; the reason is simple.

In the last several weeks, I’ve been quite physically active. I’ve made an effort to tire my body out every day in order to improve my sleep. I took long walks, did moderate cardio, and trained with dumbbells.

I didn’t intentionally work on my back muscles nor did I do any specific exercises for an improved posture. It was truly surprising that some overall physical activity helped so much.

There are two conclusions:

1) We tend to overestimate the complexity of many solutions to our challenges. When you start from a low base, your first efforts yield big results. If you are below average at something, achieving the average level can happen quite quickly.

2) Everything in our lives tends to eventually change or lose its relevance. Our weaknesses can disappear too – sometimes long before we realize it.
