The best metaphor for personal development

If you search for “personal development” on Google Images, you’ll find a bunch of trees, graphs striving upward, light bulbs, and so on. These are only illustrations. They convey the idea but can’t help in understanding the process.

I often think about personal and professional development as climbing stairs in an endless-story building.

Every floor is different, but mostly they are in a mess. When you reach a new level, you need to settle in. You will definitely have a good time here, but first, you clean it up and finish tons of chores.

That works both ways. If you find yourself in the midst of chaos, that’s probably because you made significant progress recently. Maybe you focus too much on the dust you need to wipe away and too little on the stunning view from a new height? Take your time and enjoy.

The metaphor has another component. Instead of tiring climbing, you could find an elevator. But that’s a story for another time.
